How I Begin My Day

Our car, from an upstairs window

My weather app says it is 35 degrees outside. (8 am) It's almost beach time!

I want to share with you how I begin my mornings. This is my routine. You may do it differently.

I open to the Psalms and continue reading where I left off. I am using the NIV Cultural Studies Background Bible. This is the best study Bible ever written. I go slow. Sometimes I don't get past one or two verses, because God is speaking to me. Sometimes I feel led by God's Spirit to stay on one verse for several days. As God speaks to me, I write it down in my journal.

Then, I open to the book of Proverbs and continue where I left off. I'm currently using The Message. Proverbs consistently aligns my heart and mind with God. It is amazingly relevant in understanding the root of what is happening in our American culture today.

I am also using Hearing God Through the Year: A 365-Day Devotional, by Dallas Willard. I strongly recommend this guide to hearing the voice of God. I don't do this day-by-day, because sometimes I am stopped on one entry. I stay there for a while, until I feel God has taught me what he wants me to know.

I encourage you to make it a habit of beginning your day with God. One way to do this is:

  • Read verses from the Psalms
  • Slowly read through the book of Proverbs
  • Read the Hearing God devotional book by Dallas Willard
Blessings to you this day, the day the Lord has made, another day of experiencing God, a great day of cooperating with the Holy Spirit!
