This Sunday at Redeemer we're going to finish our 3-year project of preaching through the letters of Paul, emphasizing Christology (viz., getting at the Real Jesus).
On Sept. 22 I'll preach the first sermon out of Hebrews 1:1-14. We'll be in the book of Hebrews, and its high Christology, for a long time. I am so excited about this!
Today I'm studying and prepping for the Sept. 22 message. My tools are:
- The Online Greek Bible
- The Bible in English (yes, I do read The Message, usually after all the other exegetical work is done.
- Commentaries: I've got hard copies of - George Guthrie, Ben Witherington, Donald Guthrie, and Leon Morris and Donald Burdick.
- I use Google Books to access other commentaries for free, such as: Peter O'Brien, Paul Ellingworth, F.F. Bruce, et. al.
Here's a teaser from George Guthrie:
"The four main concepts that govern the whole of Hebrews are:
- the term for "God" (theos), along with pronouns referring to God
- various designations and pronominal references to God's Son, Jesus, along with his exaltation to the right hand of God
- terms related to "the word of God"
- references to the Christian community being addressed, used either of the book's author or hearers, or both (Guthrie, 53)
I love... studying and preparing and as a result learning as I approach preaching...
