James Houston writes: "We can only fully deny ourselves when we deepen our trust in God. Like a child that takes a leap into Daddy;s strong arms, we need to have that same fearlessness that characterizes trust. Prayer lives on this fearless trust in God." (The Transforming Power of Prayer: Deepening Your Friendship with God, 65)
But what if a person has a hard time trusting? Maybe they were raised in a home that lacked love and they felt worthless? Houston writes: "We need to recognize that God takes the initiative with us. His love for us comes before our love for him." (66)
1 John 4:10-11 says: This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
A much-loved child will love much. "When we begin to realize that we belong to God, because he first loved us, then we will be able to love and trust him in a growing relationship." (Ib.)
As a Jesus-follower and God-lover you and I can live an entrusted life. "Prayer becomes a joyful experience of belonging, trusting and sharing with God in all our life and relationships." (Ib.)
Pray today.
Trust the One who loved you in the first place.
