“When a person is born from above, the life of the Son of God is born in him, and he can either starve or nourish that life. Prayer is the way that the life of God in us is nourished.” – Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest, August 28
This is why, in teaching Spiritual Formation, I assign students to pray.
As our hearts are nourished, we grow spiritually, just as when our physical bodies eat healthy food, they grow.
To grow is to change, to morph. It is, in the language of Romans 12:2, to meta-morph; to transform.
Using another metaphor, Henri Nouwen has told us that, when we are born from above, a "fire" (God's Spirit) is placed within us. We are then to "tend the fire within" lest it burn out.
Today it's either starve or nourish, spiritual famine or spiritual feast.
