A very small percentage of the already small group of American atheists (4%) are spending dollars to rent planes to carry banners in the sky to shove atheism down our throats this weekend. The banners read "God-LESS America," and "Atheism is Patriotic."
Detroit Free Press writer Mitch Albom objects here - If God made the sky, can atheists fly it?
On the statement "Atheism is Patriotic" - surely that statement is false. While some atheists may be patriotic, there's nothing in the meaning of 'atheism' that predicates 'patriotic.'
Mitch writes: "This is a classic example of an OK concept meeting a terrible idea. The group insists, on its Web site, that this "is not about ... shoving our views down people's throats." Really? Then why rent airplanes?"
The very few who will do this are "evangelical atheists." The majority of intellectual, scholarly atheists I've met and even studied under in my lifetime would not waste their money on such self-promotion.
